South Surrey security guard recognized for CPR efforts

A South Surrey security guard was recognized for performing CPR. The man was near death after collapsing at a lottery booth.

Immediate intervention with CPR

It was a rare moment for Thia Chaar last month when she was alerted to a man who collapsed after buying a lottery ticket in Semiahmoo Shopping Centre. With 4 years as security supervisor at the mall, it was only twice that a life-or-death emergency occurred during her watch.

After 30 chest compressions, the man started to show signs of life.

Luckily, for those whose lives were at stake on those two occasions, Chaar knew what to do. According Jeri Cox, marketing director for the shopping centre, they were proud of the rapid action taken by Thia and our Semiahmoo Security team.

The incident occurred at the lottery booth. The lottery booth attendant Lisa Lawson alerted Chaar after checking on a man in his 50s who started to sway in front of her and then collapsed. Chaar, 28-years old knew as soon as she saw the man that the situation was dire.

The eyes of the man was open. He did not respond to me or would at me. It seemed that he was very close to death. With her first aid training, Chaar checked his pulse and started CPR. After 30 chest compressions, the man started to show signs of life. The man took a breath and his body jerked a bit. Chaar stayed with the man to monitor his condition and offered reassurance until the emergency crews arrived.

By then, the man was able to speak and stating that he was experiencing chest discomfort before he collapsed.
