COVID-19 rule-breakers rack up to almost $500K in fines in B.C.

As the government boosts its protocols to limit the spread of COVID-19, several people are still caught violating the safety protocols. There are up to 124 tickets issued with a fine of $2,300 along with several lower fines. The fines are meant to limit further violations against the safety protocols, but still there are a few who do not follow despite the hefty fines they are going to face.

People and businesses who disobey the provincial and federal orders regarding COVID-19 have been rising. It resulted in a large collection of violation tickets since the start of the pandemic.

Let us check out the summary of the fines below:

103 $2,300 tickets issued to owners or organizers contravening Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s order on gatherings and events

  • 21 $2,300 tickets issued for disobeying the Food and Liquor Serving Premises Order
  • 450 $230 tickets issued to persons who do not comply with the instructions from law enforcement
  • 77 violation tickets totaling $84,266.25 issued to persons found to go against the federal Quarantine Act
The provincial COVID-19 Related Measures Act, which came into effect on July 10, bans social gatherings of any size inside residences but allows people who live alone to host two people with whom they regularly socialize.

The summary was released after the province announced the extension of the provincial state of emergency up to January 19, 2021. The prolonging of the state of emergency will allow a better response to the pandemic.

The provincial COVID-19 Related Measures Act prohibits social gatherings of any size within a household. However, it allows individuals living alone to accommodate two people they frequently socialize with.
