Man calls for CPR education after a heart attack

A man calls for CPR education and use of defibrillator in public places after he collapsed while running at Crunch, formerly World Gym on Lauzon Road around 9 in the morning. A stranger immediately came to his rescue and provided CPR on the victim.

Timely intervention

The man was identified as Jose Guzman a 42-year-old businessman. He suffered a heart attack while running on a treadmill at Crunch. A stranger named Dominick Matta, 19 years old, who has no experience in providing CPR in real life, immediately, performed the procedure by pumping the chest for at least 30 times in a row, and he gave 2 breaths, and then repeats again the pumping. Firefighters and paramedics arrived in the area and continued providing CPR on Guzman. After 35 minutes, Guzman has no pulse yet. A shock from a defibrillator revived the man.

According to Guzman after he was revived, he feels 100 per cent blessed. Guzman was a former bodybuilder competitor and he is used to hard training at the gym. He recalls getting on the treadmill and started to run and does not remember what happened after that.

Dominick Matta was doing bicep curls and when he turned around saw Guzman crashed hard on the treadmill. He immediately rushed over and there was no life in the eyes of Guzman. There was blood coming out of the mouth and the man was not breathing. Time was running and Matta immediately started CPR while other people in the area called the emergency numbers. Firefighters and paramedics took over and gave Guzman a shock from a defibrillator and were revived. According to the paramedics Guzman has a fractured elbow and jaw. His lip was severely cut and knocked his two front teeth.

Paramedics immediately rushed Guzman to the hospital. He was put in an induced coma and stayed in the hospital for a couple of weeks, and was released in time for the wedding of his sister.

Guzman was very grateful and thanked Matta who is his first savior and an employee of the gym who also helped with the situation. He also thanked the Windsor firefighters and the Emergency Medical Services and the personnel involved.

According to the coordinator of a charitable organization in Canada, stated that it is important to have CPR and first aid training for our home environment, but it is also important for their workplaces. In reality emergency situations happen more often at home. The first few moments are very important by starting CPR and give the victim 28% chance of survival.
