Brendan Childerley could not recall the moments leading up to a heart attack. It was this incident that brought his university hockey career to a sudden end.
Childerley started to feel sick during an intermission after the first overtime period of Acadia’s semifinal game against the Antigonish-based St. FX team.
Unexpected ordeal during the game
Childerley was rushed to a medical room and given treatment for cardiac arrest. The 24-year old was resuscitated with a defibrillator and CPR. He was later transferred to a Halifax hospital to undergo surgery to clear a clogged artery.
Taking life one step at a time
Childerley is expected to make a full recovery. He is learning to adjust at a steady pace as he allows his body to heal.
The weeks after the heart attack was a challenge for him. Luckily, he was truly thankful to have the opportunity to live more. He decided to stop with competitive hockey.
