Women who have implanted defibrillators for heart issues are likely to face more issues than men.
Issues with defibrillators
Men and women are equally likely to have cardioverter-defibrillators or ICDs implanted. Sadly, women are at higher risk for ending up with major complications in just a year of getting the devices.
The defibrillators are implanted among those who are at risk of sudden cardiac death due to heart rhythm disorders. The devices work by recognizing serious heart rhythm issues and treating them automatically with the delivery of an electrical shock.
Women are less likely to be given an appropriate shock than men based on research. The finding suggest that women must be aware of the potential risk of early complications after the surgery and consult a doctor once these occur.
