What you need to know about disposable face masks

Face masks are disposable, loose-fitting masks that cover the nose, mouth, and chin. These are mainly used to protect the wearer from splashes, sprays, and large-particle droplets as well as prevent the spread of potentially infectious respiratory secretions from the wearer to others.

The masks can vary in design but it is often flat and rectangular in shape with folds or pleats. The top part of the mask has a metal strip that can be molded to the shape of your nose. The loops hold the mask in place when it is worn. These are 95% filter disposable face masks that are lightweight and comfortable to use with an individual wrapping for hygienic purposes.

  • Clean your hands by washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Check the mask carefully for any holes or tears.
  • Locate the metal strip on the top part of the mask. The colored side of the mask faces outward or away from you.
  • Position the top part of the mask over the bridge of your nose, molding the metal strip to the form of your nose.
  • Position the loop on every ear.
  • Pull down the base of the mask, making sure that it covers your nose, mouth, and chin.

While wearing the mask, avoid touching it. In case you need to adjust it, clean your hands right away after.

When taking off the mask, remove the loops from your ears and lift it away from your face. Avoid touching the front part of the mask which might be contaminated. Dispose of the mask properly in a closed garbage bin and thoroughly wash your hands after.

By wearing a disposable face mask, it can prevent the spread of microorganisms and viruses while also protecting others from getting sick.
