A 45-year old Sydney woman died despite CPR after rescuing distressed swimmers stranded by a riptide.
Unforeseen ordeal on the water
According to RCMP Const. Tammy Lobb, the Emergency Health Services paramedics, local firefighters, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre responded to a report of a group of distressed swimmers at a beach in Broad Cove. Before the arrival of the emergency responders, several people at the beach were able to rescue the group.
The bystanders on the beach entered the water and rescued the group. Upon exiting the water, a 45-year old woman from Sydney collapsed onshore. The woman was given CPR by the bystanders until the EHS paramedics arrived. Sadly, the woman was declared dead at the scene. The woman was one of the rescuers.
At the same incident, a man was also given treatment at the scene and transported to a healthcare facility with non-life-threatening injuries.
Timely delivery of CPR
Although the outcome can be good or bad, timely delivery of CPR can make a difference. Remember that it is better that you made a move than doing nothing at all. It is recommended to enroll in a first aid course to learn life-saving skills including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
