Two police officers received a call from Esquimalt after midnight. They found a wounded man severely bleeding. They immediately provided first aid and CPR on the victim. The life of the man was able to save by the two police officers. Paramedics arrived and continued with the treatment and immediately brought to the hospital for further treatment. He is now recovering in the hospital. The man was fortunate because the two responding police officers had completed a specialized medical training and they were able to save his life.
Saving a life
Policemen in Victoria took a training program specialized at providing first aid and CPR to other injured officers called the Police Officer Down Training. According to the spokesperson for the Victoria Police Department, the two officers provided life-saving first aid to the victim using the method they recently learned from the training. They applied a 1st layer of the tourniquet and then a 2nd layer of tourniquet to the injuries of the man. It stopped the flow of blood in the affected area. When the B.C. paramedics and the Esquimalt Fire Rescue team arrived they took over the treatment and immediately brought the victim to the hospital. One police officer accompanied the victim to the hospital. According to Osoko, the spokesperson for the Victoria Police Department, the victim is now recovering in the hospital from his life-threatening injuries.
The officers’ “police officer down training” is similar to the training used by the Vancouver Police Department. The training was developed and with the assistance from the Victoria police medical director Dr. Mark Vu. It trains officers in providing advanced first aid to them and other officers. This can also help members of the public in certain situations.
According to Dr. Vu, he was grateful for the expert and professional response to these officers. They have a life-saving impact on the public and he sincerely wish for the fast recovery of the victim.
Police officers are not generally expected to provide medical help to victims, but because of the advanced medical training of the officers and severity of the injuries, they officers did not hesitate and immediately jumped into action.
