Several charges were laid against a Calgary man shot by police. The man was allegedly holding a knife and setting fire to a southwest convenience store.

Tristen Joseph Wade, 23-year old faces charges of arson endangering life, possession, and assault with weapon, theft, and assaulting police with a weapon.

Multiple charges

The police shooting started after 8 PM when reports came in regarding an erratic man armed with a kitchen knife inside 7-Eleven on the 37^th Street near Richardson Way S.W.

Upon the arrival of the police, the man retreated to a back room within the store’s Canada Post outlet. The man was urged by the officers to surrender his weapon and come forward peacefully. The man exited the room several times, refusing to drop his knife before he retreated.

As the standoff continued, the officers noticed smoke coming from the postal outlet that became thicker. The store was filling with smoke so the police acted as the suspect exited the room for the final time.

After firing a Taser, it was ineffective in subduing the man. A second officer fired his service weapon. This prompted the first officer to use his Taser to subdue the armed suspect who still refused to surrender the knife.

After releasing a police dog to finally disarm the man, the police managed to drag him out of the postal office and disarm him as the flames started to grow intense. Wade was rushed to a healthcare facility by EMS with gunshot wounds, self-inflicted stab wounds, and smoke inhalation. He is currently recovering in the hospital.
