A grandmother in a pool accident was declared dead despite delivery of CPR. The woman died from drowning just hours after trying unsuccessfully to rescue her 20-month old grandson from the same fate.

Watery ordeal

According to B.C. Coroner’s Service, it was Warina Nissan, 51-years old and her grandson, Ivan Yousif who were found face down in the pool of a Guildford apartment complex at 10525 150 St.

CPR was performed initially by residents and then the ambulance paramedics and fire department first responders, but they cannot be resuscitated. The grandmother remained in a critical condition but sadly died.

Both victims are thought to have been non-swimmers and were in the water for an extended period before they were found by other building residents who had arrived to use the pool.

According to RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger, there were early indications that the infant fell into the pool and the grandmother followed to save him. It was a tragic event. Both were fully clothed and weren’t there to swim. Foul play is not suspected.
