Margaret Bell was out on a walk when she noticed a paddle boat in the water near Calgary Canoe Club which was unusual. When she took a closer look, she thought she saw a beaver but it was a person. At that point, she knew that the person needed help.

The Calgary Fire Department’s annual Beyond the Call award program honors people who go beyond in emergencies, oftentimes risking their own lives to prevent someone else’s injury, property damage, or death.

The recipients of the award pulled people from burning vehicles and buildings, performed CPR, and rescued several people and a dog from drowning.

Bell ran as fast as she could down the ridge and stairs to the water. She jumped into the cold water and yelled at the man as she swam to him. Bell utilized her fleece sweater to drag the man back to shore.
