Basic first aid: Bus diver and fourth-grade saves a life

With the help of basic first aid, a life of a student was saved. The life of a fourth-grade student was out of danger with the help of a Harris County School District bus driver.

It was during the November 1 meeting of the Harris County Board of Education when bus driver Mary Beth Hudson and fourth-grader Kaitlyn Blackmon of Mulberry Creek Elementary School receive honors for their heroism.

On October 5, Hudson drives the Bus No. 07-46 on an afternoon route. While the bus was about to leave the Mulberry Creek campus, Kaitlyn cried out for Hudson as an alert after seeing a student who was choking and requires assistance.

As a proficient HCSD bus driver, Hudson has certification on Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED.

Delivery of first aid care

This ordeal simply shows that enrolling in a first aid and CPR course can make a big difference during emergencies.

The driver quickly and safely stopped the bus before moving to the child at the last seat of the bus. Hudson initiated the Heimlich maneuver and upon delivering the third abdominal thrust, it successfully dislodged the object. When checking if the student was properly breathing and out of danger, the child was transferred to the front seat close to her. Hudson returned to the driver’s seat and continued with the afternoon route.

It was a nerve-wracking experience for Hudson and all the while, she was hoping that what she is doing is going to work. Luckily, her timely intervention using a basic first aid measure worked.

Recognition of first aid importance

For Hudson’s effort, it was a truly honorable action. Along with Kaitlyn’s awareness of the surroundings and prompt action to call for help, it helped save a life.

Hudson claims that she did not expect a lot of attention for her effort. It was indeed touching, and she highly appreciates the recognition for her actions.

This ordeal simply shows that enrolling in a first aid and CPR course can make a big difference during emergencies. You never know when emergencies can occur, and it is best that you are ready to deal with one once it arises.
