Using non-medical masks can stop the spread of COVID-19 before symptoms start

The use of non-medical face masks can help Canadians curb down the spread of the COVID-19 virus even before any symptoms develop. This is a recent statement by health officials.

According to the statement by the chief medical officer of Canada, a special advisory committee agreed that using a non-medical face mask is a must if symptoms are absent. It is important to note that it serves as an extra precaution to protect others, particularly in areas where it is hard to maintain proper physical distancing in public transit and grocery stores. Nevertheless, using a face mask does not mean stopping physical distancing, self-isolation, or handwashing measures.

The chief medical officer of Canada stated that the special advisory committee decided on a consensus that wearing a non-medical mask is important even if you do not have symptoms.

The use of a non-medical face mask in the community has not yet been proven to provide protection to the individual wearing it though. Take note that non-medical masks can prevent the spread of the coronavirus from an infected person who either has no symptoms or has not yet developed them. The medical masks, specifically the N95 masks should be reserved for the healthcare workers who need them the most.

When it comes to the use of non-medical masks, there is still limited evidence if it can prevent asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic spread. Additionally, various materials that you can find at homes such as bandanas, cotton shirts, and sheets can be utilized.
