Snowmobiler died despite CPR after cornice accident

A 52-year old snowmobiler died despite CPR after a cornice collapsed under his snowmobile in Whistler. Based on the news release, the Whistler Search and Rescue were sent to Mt. Callaghan after reports of a snowmobiler who had fallen in the area. The man identified as Karl Baker was a founding member of Nanaimo Search and Rescue.

The search crews found that the man stopped his snowmobile on a snow cornice that later collapsed. He was found partly buried 250 feet below the snow. Even though other snowmobilers in the area dug him out and initiated CPR, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Carl Trobridge, Nanaimo Search and Rescue president in a statement, the members were saddened to learn of the passing of Karl Baker who was a dedicated member of the NSAR for more than 15 years.
