In an attempt to help keep the number of COVID-19 cases low, face masks are officially required in indoor spaces in several regions across the country.
These bylaws are consistent with recommendations by the Public Health Agency of Canada, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization.
In areas where COVID-19 is spreading, health experts agree that wearing masks or other face coverings in public helps reduce the risk of spreading the virus when people cannot physically distance by staying two meters or 6 feet apart.
However, there continues to be some confusion about when it is recommended that masks be worn and when they may be of little practical value.
Do I need a mask when exercising outdoors?
If you are going for a run or bike outside, you generally do not need a face mask. The only time it is recommended to wear a mask outdoors is if you are going to be in a situation where other people may be close to you – such as waiting in line to get into a restaurant.
If you cannot guarantee that people are not going to be able to stay away from you for a prolonged period, it makes sense to wear a mask.
If you are outside and maintaining physical distancing as much as possible from those around you, not wearing a mask is completely reasonable and likely to be more comfortable for the person engaging in the exercise.
