An inmate identified in his 20’s was found at the Hamilton-Wenthworth Detention Center without any vital signs.
Saving a life
According to the police superintendent, David Thompson, paramedics received a call from the Barton jail about 1:50 in the afternoon. An inmate was found inside his cell in medical distress. The paramedics immediately provided CPR and first aid on the victim. He was immediately rushed to the hospital in severe condition but later he was declared dead.
The Ministry of the Attorney General spokesperson Andrew Morrison stated in news he confirmed the inmate inside his cell was found in medical distress. The staff immediately responded and provided CPR and first aid treatment on the victim. Other staff called emergency numbers. Emergency medical services arrived in the area and continued with the treatment. He was immediately transported to the hospital and later declared dead.
According to McKechnie when she heard about the latest death at the Barton jail, she was heartbroken, there are so many emotions. It reopens other wounds. We are fighting to help stop these deaths from happening. Other families who have lost their family members inside the jail have protested several times. They are calling for proper care for the inmates inside the jail as the number of overdoses deaths continues to increase.
McKechnie together with two other women Angela Case and Tamara Bowley whose family members have died inside the jail planted crosses outside the detention center. We want a memorial for our loved ones. We want to let people know that something happened, they died here.
According to the Hamilton Emergency Medical Services, they responded to the 59 emergencies in the jail. These people were provided with first aid and CPR. It also includes incidents related to potential opioid and drug overdoses.
The news stated that there are more inmates have overdosed and died inside the Barton Street jail than in any other provincial correctional institution in Ontario.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has provided measures and protection for inmates with addiction problems. But advocates and some family members of the inmates who have died in the jail says that it is not enough to save lives. They are still insistent that there some specific issues inside the jail that is making it more dangerous with the other institutions.
