Two police officers Bill Kapitanchuk and Danielle Kwok responded to the area where a girl, 8 years old was hit by a train. They saw the father holding the girl whose leg was severely injured. The two officers immediately provided first aid to the girl. They have to deal with the loss of blood. They applied a tourniquet on the affected leg of the girl to lessen the flow of blood. The paramedics arrived and took over with the treatment.
Unforeseen ordeal
The two officers described their reactions and emotions they felt as they stepped in to help the little girl. They just performed what they were trained to do. They were very emotional, when they knew the girl was going to be ok. We also have kids, and when the victim is a small child it touches our nerves and breaks our hearts.
The incident happened on the railroad tracks located at Maplewood Avenue and Cumberland Avenue about 6 p.m. emergency crews were called in the area, but two police officers arrived in the area ahead of the Emergency Medical Services. Kapitanchuk saw the girl’s father holding her before he stepped in and provided first aid to the girl. It was the first time that these officers used the band that the police are equipped with. He applied the tourniquet and kept on talking to the girl that she was going to be ok. Four small children were also around at that time.
According to the Hamilton police, they believed that the girl was playing together with her friends along the tracks. There is a possibility that the children attempted to jump onto the train that was traveling at a very slow speed. The child fell and her leg was run over by the train. Her leg was severely injured and bleeding severely. According to Kwok it was a team effort together with the Emergency Medical Services and the fire department. They provided first aid to the girl. They applied tourniquet on the leg of the girl and kept on talking to her, distract her and make her feel comfortable as possible. The girl was very strong and brave during it all. She was immediately brought to the hospital for further treatment.
