The COVID-19 pandemic has been detrimental to many businesses. Several businesses are forced to close down. Sadly, the Vancouver Aquarium is one of those establishments on the verge of closing down. It is a not-for-profit operation that closed its doors in March 17 due to the pandemic.
The Vancouver Whitecaps were able to sell more than 65,000 face masks with the net proceeds to be given to the Vancouver Aquarium which is under financial crisis.
The MLS team announced that it was able to sell up to $1 million worth of face masks since the two groups publicized the fundraising campaign. The face masks were available in almost every province and two of the three territories in Canada. The coverage even reached France, Japan, Austria, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States.
The aquarium store website crashed briefly due to the volume of orders pouring in. Alliance Mercantile/Boardroom Clothing which is in charge of masking the masks stated that the demand has allowed them to keep their personnel while some of their supplies are bringing the staff back.
The Vancouver Aquarium which is a not-for-profit operation closed on March 17 due to the pandemic. It has been struggling to survive with more than 60% of its temporarily laid off. The designs of the masks draw inspiration from the Whitecaps crest and the aquarium itself.
