The B.C. Coroner’s Service is investigating after a skier and snowboarder died after ending up trapped in tree wells in separate events in southeast B.C.
Icy ordeal
The first incident occurred at around 12:30 PM which involved a snowboarder at Whitewater Ski Resort near Nelson, B.C.
A passerby discovered the snowboarder and quickly started CPR and called for support from ski patrol and emergency first responders. The victim who is in his 30s was transported to a healthcare facility where he was declared dead.
The second incident occurred at around 4:30 PM when a man was found unresponsive in a tree well at Fernie Alpine Resort. Based on the initial reports, the victim was skiing with another person when they were separated. His companion re-traced his run and found the man. The man who is also in his 30s was transported in a healthcare facility where he was declared dead.
Importance of first aid training
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. Prompt delivery of life-saving techniques improves the chances of survival during emergencies.
