A 6-year old who drowned in a creek nearly died in a similar tragedy. Vondrae Martin was found facing-down in his grandparent’s pool and spent a month recovering in BC Children’s Hospital.
Near drowning ordeal
His grandmother, a former nurse received an award for pulling him out of the water and performing CPR until the arrival of the paramedics. Her neighbors were given the same recognition for their help. Sadly, the family’s happy ending turned into a tragedy this week.
Martin was reported missing in the Bowron Court area of North Vancouver. The Mounties, search crews and ambulance personnel were called to help find him. The officers discovered the boy unresponsive in Taylor Creek minutes after arriving, just meters from his family home. Sadly, this time, help came too late.
Considering Martin’s death, Mounties are warning the public that creeks and rivers are swollen and fast-running after heavy rainfall in the area. According to Cpl. Richard de Jong, it is vital to be very cautious and aware of the swift-moving rivers and creeks that are at an all-time high.
