Due to the increasing demand for face masks, it resulted in high demand by the public. Based on a statement by a spokesperson for the MLS team behind the drive to save the Vancouver Aquarium, they are taking the necessary steps to boost production and shipping efforts.
The face masks were on sale in April after the aquarium made public its struggle to stay afloat financially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since the facility largely depends on ticket and concession sales, it was forced to close its doors due to the physical distancing guidelines implemented by the government. Initially, the establishment was struggling to meet the costs with animal care. With the assistance by the Vancouver Whitecaps, the aquarium started to sell face masks online, featuring branding from both local institutions.
The sales of the face masks was a boon since they were very popular with sales reaching up to $1 million in just one weekend. Approximately 25,000 face masks were sold on the first day alone. Sadly, it was difficult to meet the demand. Customers who ordered in April were not yet able to receive their masks this June.
The Whitecaps stated that they had more than 130,000 masks sold but only around 107,000 have been completed. Around 82,000 have been completed.
