A Sydney man died during the weekend from a suspected drowning. Greg MacDonald, 59-years old and his wife Sharon were standing together in waist deep water at the lifeguarded beach in Port Hood.
Watery ordeal
In an instant, the couple was hit by a wave and both sensed that they were in trouble. According to Gerald MacDonald, brother of the victim, his brother did not have any existing condition that led to trouble or he got into distress. He added that his brother managed to push his wife to the side.
According to Paul D’Eon, director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service, MacDonald was around 30 meters off shore when the incident occurred. When his wife got to him, he was talking and responsive. While she started to bring him in, he was still kicking but gradually deteriorated. Upon reaching the beach, he was not breathing and unresponsive.
The paramedics and lifeguards administered CPR and a defibrillator was utilized but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Gerald MacDonald, aside from the lifeguards, there were several nurses and at least 2 doctors present on the beach at the time who offered help. He is grateful for the efforts of all involved.
An autopsy was performed in Halifax to figure out to precise cause of death.
