Although the message to wear face masks on transit has been in effect for months, the recommendation is not being followed by everyone, and some are now calling for tougher steps to protect passengers on board.
It has been over a month since TransLink kicked off an official campaign to encourage face-coverings on board, but at a Mayor’s Council meeting, CEO Kevin Desmond stated that less than half of riders are wearing one. It has been estimated that around 40% or so of the customers are in fact wearing masks at this point in time.
In other cities and provinces, they have made face masks on board transit a requirement, including Quebec and Nova Scotia. Masks are already mandatory in Toronto transit, although they are not enforcing the requirement.
