A 72-year old was successfully resuscitated with CPR and AED by a police officer. The paramedics are crediting a city police officer for saving the life of a 72-year old man who collapsed outside a west-end restaurant last weekend. With prompt delivery of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED), it saved his life.
Proper intervention
The paramedic service stated that early recognition and delivery of both CPR and AED is the key to saving victims of cardiac arrest.
Const. Ashley Nisbet was the first on the scene when the man collapsed on Carling Avenue near Maitland Avenue. She started the resuscitation efforts. Upon the arrival of the paramedics, the man regained a pulse but was still unconscious.
He started moving during his transport to the hospital in critical condition which was an encouraging sign.
Nisbet, just like all Ottawa Police Services officers were trained on using an AED as part of first aid training when hired and does yearly refreshers.
