A North Vancouver father is recognized as hero for performing CPR. He performed the life-saving procedure on a man who went into medical distress on a SeaBus.
Immediate delivery of CPR
Brian Counihan was heading home to his family on the North Shore when a man across from him started to feel unwell. A friend who was with the man asked for help. Counihan came over and laid the man down onto the ground.
As an engineer with the District of North Vancouver, Counihan has taken several industrial first aid courses. He stated that he never had to utilize those skills before but was able to quickly jump into action.
At some point, there was no pulse anymore. The man appeared to be breathing but after some time, it was clear that he wasn’t anymore. It was when Counihan started CPR and continued until the paramedics boarded the SeaBus when it docked.
According to Gerald Simkus, a heart doctor at Royal Columbian Hospital, the chances of survival can double if someone knows CPR and acts rapidly. Early bystander CPR can improve the chances significantly as well as defibrillation.
