An inmate was found unresponsive and given CPR but later declared dead. An inquest investigated the death of Roman William Rezanowicz, 57-years old who was found unresponsive in his cell at the Regional Treatment Centre at Pacific Institution which is a federal prison. The jury made suggestions after the coroner’s inquest.
Death at the prison
At the time the inmate was found unresponsive, the staff members quickly started CPR and emergency services were called but he could not be resuscitated. Rezanowicz had cut his femoral artery and died from blood loss.
The man was serving a life sentence after strangling his wife to death back in 1996 and hanging her in the garage to make the death appear to be suicide.
Among the recommendations of the jury after the inquest were to conduct inmate checks at random intervals and prison staff to undergo training in first aid including CPR at least once a year.
The jurors also suggested that when inmates move to a new institution, the new staff must receive and read “proper documentation” on the prisoners and that all departments must have access to relevant information including medical records.
Importance of CPR
It is recommended to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It is a life-saving skill that can save a life and improve the chances of survival during emergencies.
