The two 25-year old men who died in a Salt Spring Island lake incident were given CPR. The victims were identified as Masahi Shintani and Ryo Yamaguchi who were both originally from Japan.
Watery ordeal
Both men were visiting Salt Spring Island on a short vacation. They went swimming with a third person at Weston Lake which was a small lake near Ruckle Provincial Park. Although the third friend was able to reach a wharf, both Yamaguchi and Shintani could not.
It appears that after one of the men started to have trouble in the water, the other went to find help.
The two swimmers were pulled from the water and transported to Lady Minto Hospital in Ganges but were not successfully resuscitated.
A local woman headed out first in a boat and was able to pull one man from the water. The emergency crews shortly arrived and used their own boat to retrieve the second man at around 15 meters away from the shore. The emergency crews performed CPR on both men.
According to a local resident, the lake floor drops off sharply a few meters from the shore which was near when the incident took place.
