Burton’s Laurie Ouellette was saved by a nurse with CPR. She suffered cardiac arrest in a restaurant while visiting family in Ontario.
If not for the rapid response of an off-duty nurse and a series of coincidences, the Burton woman would not be alive today.
Turning blue
Ouellette, 57-years old was with her husband visiting family. One day, she went to Wendy’s with her husband and mother to buy something to eat. While sitting at a table, Ouellette’s head bobbed and her chin touched her chest and her head struck the table.
Her husband shouted for someone to call 911. Luckily, an off-duty nurse, Amanda Ferrari was at the restaurant at that time.
She placed Ouellette on the floor and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to restart her breathing. Ouellette later learned that she suffered a cardiac arrest due to an obstructed artery.
Cardiac arrest
The emergency medical services arrived at the restaurant after 10-15 minutes after receiving the call. Ouellette was sure that the intervention of the nurse saved her life, especially due to the low survival rate of victims outside a healthcare facility.
