An Ottawa police officer attempted to save a young man who drowned. According to the police officer, it is vital for those who witness emergencies to provide aid after seeing some people simply standing by and do nothing.
Emergency concerns
Det.-Const. Hussein Assaad was off duty at Lac Leamy with friends and family when they heard people shouting for help. They moved close to the scene where they saw a 24-year old man lying on the ground unconscious after being dragged out of the lake.
According to Assaad, the young man was in the water for around 10-15 minutes before discovered and a bystander was performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the shore.
The officer recalled his training and informed the bystander to stop mouth-to-mouth breathing. After taking over, he performed compressions and with each compression, water gushed out of his mouth.
Standing by the lines
In the meantime, other people nearby did nothing to help. The officer was disappointed seeing that when everybody was rushing to help, some were simply watching. When something like this happens, it is vital to help in any way possible. Enrolling in a CPR course can help someone and increase the chances of survival.
Assaad stopped the compressions when on-duty police officers and paramedics arrived and took over. The man was transported to a healthcare facility where he died the next day.
