CPR was performed by off-duty firefighters to save the life of a man suffering a heart attack.
Saving a life
The dramatic rescue unfolded during a Victoria Shamrocks lacrosse game at the Q Centre in Colwood.
Two off-duty firefighters were working security at the game when one man suffered a heart attack. The two firefighters started to perform CPR on the man, catching the attention of Langford’s off-duty fire chief who was also watching the game.
As the trio performed chest compressions, a Q Centre staff member brought over an automated external defibrillator (AED). The AED and CPR were enough to keep the man breathing and his pulse pumping until an ambulance arrived and the paramedics took over.
Large public venues are now putting AEDs for public use and it actually made a difference. At the time of the incident, it was fortunate to have three experienced firefighters. Along with the AED, it made a big difference as well.
The dramatic incident serves as a good opportunity to encourage the community to brush up on first aid training.
Importance of first aid training
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. Prompt delivery of life-saving techniques improves the chances of survival during emergencies.
