Emergency defibrillation save life of basketball player

A 16-year old was saved with a public access defibrillator. The teenager collapsed during a game at an Orleans school.

Timely use of an AED

A dispatcher helped them in initiating CPR and deliver a single shock that restarted the heart of the teenager after getting a call.

The youth collapsed into a seizure while playing basketball and continued to have seizures which the paramedics aggressively managed with intravenous medications while on his way to the hospital. The youth arrived at CHEO alive but in critical condition.

The quick actions of the bystanders, prompt delivery of CPR and the use of the school’s public access defibrillator were instrumental in the survival of the teenager.

The prompt delivery of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. These life-saving skills significantly improve the chances of survival during emergencies.
