Edmonton city peace officers issued 36 tickets to people for not wearing a mask or face covering over the weekend.
The City of Edmonton stated that from December 11 to 13, community standards peace officers patrolled 200 locations where 245 warnings were given out in addition to the 36 tickets. The city council mandated face coverings in all indoor places and public vehicles until December 31, 2021.
Over the same time, municipal enforcement officers observed roughly 20,000 people at 34 locations, primarily at shopping malls. The city stated that the officers reported 99% compliance with the face-covering bylaw. Two tickets were issued to those who did not follow the bylaw and 148 warnings were issued.
Public health act violations in Alberta include things such as disregarding gathering limits, ignoring isolation requirements, violating capacity restrictions, not following mandatory closures or breaking physical distancing rules.
Most of the violent altercations occurred in retail and other customer-facing locations like convenience stores, malls, and restaurants. Victims were either store employees or members of the public. Security guards, transit officers, bus drivers, and paramedics were among other victims.
