A renowned runner collapsed at the finish line of a popular Maritime road race. Without the prompt action of the right people, the outcome might be worse.
Tom Cholock does not head out for a run on his own, but he did so on Monday with his running partner in mind. Tommy Turner collapsed 10 feet away from the finish line after joining a half marathon.
Timely first aid
According to Cholock, you will never realize or expect that one of your running buddies would end up on the ground. He simply stood back and looked at the big picture and wondered why this happened.
Turner has several years of experience in running and joined several marathons. At the site of the incident, while people cheered, Turner stumbled before collapsing to the ground. The first on the scene was Doctor Chris Milburn.
According to Milburn, the medical staff was nearby when the man collapsed. It was a terrible event, but help was just nearby. The medical staff delivered CPR before he was transported by ambulance to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and currently in an induced coma and listed in severe condition.
Cholock will continue with his daily routine, but with his running partner and his family in mind. He hopes for his speedy recovery and will surely miss their daily runs and training.
Why basic first aid is vital
In instances where you are faced with a scenario where a person needs help and there is no medical personnel around, being trained on first aid and CPR is an advantage. Enrolling in first aid and CPR course is essential.
