An off-duty police officer is recognized as a hero for performing life-saving CPR on a man who collapsed at a local hockey rink.

The police officer was at Planet Ice waiting for his own team’s game to start when he noticed a “commotion on the ice.” He figured that somebody was injured but soon noticed someone performing CPR on a 27-year old player who had gone into cardiac arrest.

It was then that the officer jumped into action. He realized that first aid was not performed properly. He went and offered assistance. In his eight years with the police, he has not used CPR but the training quickly came back to him.

He performed chest compressions from the recommended two minutes before using an automated external defibrillator (AED) on the patient, but the man did not have a pulse after being shocked. He continued with chest compressions after another two minutes in which the man started to breathe and the AED detected a pulse.
