A 4-year old boy was given CPR after drowning in a swimming pool in a backyard in Laval. The residents called 911 shortly before 3 PM when they pulled the boy out of the pool on Des Capucines St. in the Ste. Dorothee neighborhood.
Watery ordeal
The police were the first to arrive on the scene and officers performed CPR until the paramedics showed up and took over. The paramedics rushed the boy to a healthcare facility where he was declared dead.
According to the police, there were adults in the yard at the time of the drowning but it remains unclear if anyone else was in the pool. The police are no longer commenting on the case since it is now in the hands of the provincial coroner.
Children must be within reach
Parents must stay very close to young children in the water, no matter how well they swim. Parents must be within “arm’s reach”. If you are not in “arm’s reach”, it simply means you are too far.
There have been at least 30 drowning deaths in Quebec this year. It is a 20% increase from the same time last year. One of the reasons for the increase is that 10 of the drownings occurred in rivers with high water levels. The water levels can lead to stronger currents, making swimming conditions challenging.
