Ian Flynn was assisted by colleagues to save a life. A casino security officer was recognized for taking command when a patron collapsed with a heart attack. He performed CPR and directed the use of a defibrillator until the man was loaded into an ambulance.
CPR on the line
Flynn is the CPR trainer for all employees with Casino Nova Scotia. He has been an instructor for almost 35 years but the incident was the first time he save a life since he began training.
Rapid response
The man, Jamael, had no pulse and not breathing. Flynn started CPR right away. The casino staff are recertified in CPR training every 3 years and a refresher course was offered a couple of weeks ago.
As Flynn was working with the compressions, another delivered the breaths in between. A defibrillator was obtained and the pads were applied and they followed the prompts from the device. Up to 3 shocks were given but there was no response. Two ambulances arrived just as Flynn was preparing to deliver the 4th shock. The EMT’s left him to it as they set up and it worked. Jamael’s heart started to beat again.
