Bystanders and off-duty officer saved a man’s life

Some bystanders and an off-duty officer saved the life of a man by providing CPR. The police identified the man as Herb Burridge, in his 70’s. He collapsed while loading a package into his car in a parking lot of a Canadian Tire store.

Saving a life

He was immediately flown to Winnipeg by an air ambulance. He was further treated at
St. Boniface and Grace Hospitals before transferred to Brandon, Manitoba where he will continue to recover.

While recovering, Burridge recalled that when he woke up in the ambulance he saw a light above him. He does not anymore remember anything that happened after he collapsed and his ride in the ambulance.

He immediately got the AED or the automated external defibrillator inside the store and used it on Burridge.

Lana Russell, daughter of Burridge, posted online requests for information about some bystanders who were able to help his father during the incident and called emergency numbers. These bystanders immediately provided CPR on his father before the paramedics arrived.

According to Russell, her father does not have any history of heart problems. Later she received a txt message from a man. His message to Russell was that he was just simply happy to hear that your father is doing well and recovering from his illness.

Russell does not have any idea of the man who sent her messages. The man was police Constable Jason Medwechuk. He told Russell that he was with his wife in the parking lot when the incident happened.

According to Medwechuk, he helped some bystanders in providing CPR on Burridge. He immediately got the AED or the automated external defibrillator inside the store and used it on Burridge.

Russell thanked the other woman was also in the area when the incident happened. She was the one who called the emergency numbers. She was very grateful and thanks to some bystanders and Const. Medwechuk.

Burridge hopes to get to know Medwechuk a little better and wants to tell him how grateful he is of his immediate action in providing help. It is an emotional experience of everything that happened. And Burridge is very happy that there are people around that are willing to help. There is real importance in learning how to perform CPR.
