A baby was saved from the fast response of witnesses at the scene of a fatal head-on collision in rural Saskatchewan.
According to Gibson, the fire and rescue chief, the baby named Winston was in one of the vehicles. Bystanders immediately provided first aid and CPR to the victims. “It’s the biggest relief you want to see”. It is always hard on first responders to respond to tragedies that involves death especially small children and babies. If the child died, it just turns everybody and the department upside down.
Vehicular collision
The collision happened on Highway 1 east of Tompkins, Sask. The royal Canadian mounted police were notified of a fast moving vehicle and driving on the wrong side of the highway. A few minutes later they were called to a two-vehicle head-on collision.
The mother of Winston, 27 year old Melanie Hughes and grandmother, Loretta Hudges about in her 60’s were sitting in the front of their vehicle. Both were killed. According to the police the driver of the other vehicle who driving in the wrong side of the road is identified as a 66 year old man living in Gull Lake. He was also declared dead at the scene. The police believe that alcohol could have been a factor in the collision.
Dangers on the road
According to Gibson, at least three separate semi-truck drivers have already stopped at the area. The drivers saw baby Winston in the back of the vehicle. They rescued the baby on the non-damaged side of the window. One of the bystanders, a woman, immediately provided first aid on the baby. Winston stopped crying and settled down. He was in good hands. The woman had training in first aid.
Gibson did not have the time to thank the bystanders or get their names because it just happened very quickly within a matter of moments. He also credits the fast actions of the bystanders in rescuing the baby, especially the risk of a fire after the collision. These people know what they are doing and you could not ask for any better help.
Friends of Loretta Hughes and her daughter-in-law, Melanie describe them as loving women with big hearts. A GoFundMe campaign was started in support for the family of Melanie Hughes.
