In a movie theater in Halifax, it was a life-or-death situation when an audience went into cardiac arrest.
Earl Kiely is alive thanks to the quick thinking of the audience members who knew what to do. Kiely nearly died, but now he is taking time to appreciate the simple things.
He was dragged down to the floor and CPR was started by the audience members. It was then that they called 911 and were given instructions to continue. When a defibrillator was brought to the scene, Earl was trying to breathe.
The couple is grateful that the movie theater has an automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site and people in the audience knew how to use it.
According to Mike Janczyszyn of Emergency Health Services (EHS), the benefits of early access to defibrillation and bystander CPR are clear.
