The Saanich lifeguards were recognized for the delivery of CPR during a cardiac emergency. Four Saanich aquatic staff were honored for their quick and skillful life-saving actions during a cardiac arrest emergency.
Saving a life
Current employees Katie Bowers and Ceilidh Robertson-Jones and previous employees Wade Thoreson and Jeff Harris were recognized for rushing to the aid of a patron when he collapsed due to cardiac arrest at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre.
Ted Frechette was in the weight room when he collapsed in an apparent cardiac arrest. Before the arrival of the paramedics, lifeguards Bowers and Robertson-Jones rushed to his side and started CPR. With the assistance from Harris and Thoreson, the team used the automated external defibrillator (AED) and successfully resuscitated him.
The main contributors to cardiac arrest survival are the speed in which CPR is initiated and how long before a defibrillator arrives at the patient’s side.
