3 workers identified as victims of Fernie ammonia leak

A state of emergency is in effect after a leak at the ice rink. There were 2 city workers and one contractor who were identified as victims of the ammonia leak at the Fernie Memorial Arena.

According to Mayor Mary Giuliano, the names of the victims will not be released and a local state of emergency is in effect up to Oct 24.

The firefighters arrived at the arena to find one individual who was taken to a healthcare facility after receiving CPR.

The ammonia leak occurred at around 11:30 AM. The firefighters arrived at the arena to find one individual who was taken to a healthcare facility after receiving CPR. Shortly after, 2 individuals were found and the area was evacuated.

A Hazmat team from Calgary was left on the scene where the ice rink was secured but not the leak. An order of evacuation is in effect until further notice.

According to Fire Chief Ted Ruiter, it was an extremely difficult day. Additional resources arrived from other parts of Alberta and B.C. to come up with a plan to enter the facility.

The police are still investigating which involves witness interviews and assessment of the scene.
